Coke Drying System for JSPL Angul, Odisha

Client
JSPL
End user
Angul, Odisha
Coke drying bunkers fed by sinter cooler waste hot air at JSPL Angul

A 150 TPH coke drying system at the JSPL Angul works, using 258,000 Nm³/hr of sinter cooler waste hot air to bring blast furnace coke moisture down from 5% to 2%.

The challenge

  • High energy losses as waste hot air from the sinter cooler was vented directly into the atmosphere.
  • Coke used in the blast furnace had a moisture content of 5%, which increased coke consumption and reduced blast furnace performance, leading to higher operational costs and inefficiencies.

Our solution

  • Capturing waste hot air from the sinter cooler (258,000 Nm³/hr at 250°C)
  • Diluting and controlling the temperature to ensure safe drying.
  • Transferring the Hot gases to the Coke bunkers (150 TPH capacity) with a proper distribution system.
  • Utilizing a 'Moving packed bed' concept for effective heat transfer and retention.
  • Installing robust safety systems for safe and reliable operation.
  • Enabling use of alternate waste gas sources like boiler exhaust, glandon heater exhaust, and stove exhaust.

The results

  • Coke drying capacity: 150 TPH
  • Reduction in moisture: From 5%, down to 2%
  • Waste energy utilized: 8.5 Million Kcal/hr
  • Equivalent Coke saving: 1030 kg/hr
  • Capital Investment: ₹8 Cr.
  • Estimated Payback period: 8 months

Main benefits to the client

  • Substantial Energy savings
  • Improved blast furnace performance
  • Attractive payback period
  • Reduction in Carbon Footprint
